St. Louis, Missouri is a city that is well known for its rich brewing history and culture. With the establishment of Anheuser-Busch in the mid-1800s, St. Louis became a vital brewing city early in its development. Today, St. Louis is home to over 65 different breweries, brewpubs, and microbreweries.

Whether you want to tour a local brewery, catch up with friends, or grab a drink before the Cardinal’s game, there’s a brewery for every occasion. From classic brewpubs to modern taprooms, there are plenty of options to satisfy your thirst for great beer and good times.

4 Hands Brewing Company

4 Hands Brewing Company is a well-known craft brewery, founded by Kevin Lemp, in the LaSalle Park neighborhood. It's also adjacent to Lafayette Square, about a mile from Lehmann House.

The founder, no relation to the infamous Lemp Brewery family, wanted a unique name that captured his innovative approach to brewing.

With continual success since its foundation in 2011, 4 Hands consistently creates unique and experimental beer styles. They focus on barrel-aged and sour beers. Their branding is as effective as their flavors, with colorful and entertaining can label designs.

They have one of the best taprooms to visit in the city. They offer plenty of drink options as well as food for the whole family.

In addition to its fantastic beers, 4 Hands is committed to giving back to the community with donations to several local charities and continued collaboration with Cardinal Glennon’s Children’s Hospital.

Beers to Try

  • City Wide Pilsner: 5.5% ABV, pairs with pork steaks and St. Louis-style pizza
  • Divided Sky Rye IPA: 6.5% ABV, pairs with blue cheese and salami.

Perennial Artisan Ales

Founded by Phil and Emily Wymore, Perennial Artisan Ales is an award-winning in South St. Louis brewery. In fact, throughout the Great American Beer Festivals, Perennial has won five awards, primarily for their Belgian-style beers and mastery of barrel-age stouts.

In addition to their award winners, Perennial specializes in flavored stouts, colorful IPAs, and saisons. Like 4 Hands, they also excel in specialized label designs, featuring cozy and indulgent cans for you to admire as you sip their complexly layered beers.

In theme with other breweries on our list, Perennial has tour options, a massive taproom, and food options, allowing you to go there for a quick drink, an extended dinner, or a full day.

Urban Chestnut Brewing Company

Urban Chestnut, founded by Florian Kuplent and David Wolfe, is a fun and gorgeous brewery to check out when you’re in town. Their signature style combines traditional German beer-making with innovative American techniques.

The South City location features a massive German-style beer hall where you can sit at long tables with your closest friends and drink in the beautiful atmosphere along with the beer.

While unconventional, Urban Chestnut provides a unique approach to brewing with roots in traditional beer-making augmented by modern techniques to offer groundbreaking flavors.

  • Zwickel: 5.1% ABV; Bready, lightly hopped, and smooth.
  • STLIPA: 8% ABV; Piney, clean, and herbal.

Second Shift Brewing

Second Shift Brewing is a small craft brewery in St. Louis, founded in 2010 by Steve Crider and his wife, Libby. The brewery is located in the Historic Hill neighborhood, centrally located and just a few miles from Lehmann House.

While they offer a rotating variety of beers in their taproom, their style includes everything from IPAs to stouts, Belgian-style beers, and sours. They are especially adept at signature stouts, including the Silhouette Imperial, Bless this Mess Imperial and Monte Carlo Gimme S’more Stouts.

Overall, Second Shift Brewing is a beloved and highly regarded brewery in St. Louis. They're known for their creative and experimental beers, welcoming atmosphere, and commitment to quality.

Square One Brewery

Square One Brewery & Distillery is a craft brewery and distillery located in historic Lafayette Square, just two blocks from lodging at Lehmann House. The brewery was founded in 2006 by Steve Neukomm. The distillery was added in 2013, making it the first combination brewery and distillery in Missouri.

Square One is known for its award-winning beers, which include a wide range of styles such as lagers, ales, stouts, and Belgian-style beers. They also produce a variety of spirits, including whiskey, vodka, gin, and rum.

If you’re looking for a cozy dine-in experience, with really good upscale pub food and premium beverage options, Square one is your go-to destination. The best part is they’re just a few blocks from Lehmann House Bed and Breakfast.
