The Famous Hi-Pointe Theatre Is Now Owned by Cinema StL

St. Louis moviegoers have probably heard of Hi-Pointe Theatre. Located near Forest Park, it's a gorgeous and impressive arthouse. Return customers may be surprised that the centenarian theatre is under new management.

The famous Hi-Pointe Theatre in St. Louis was built in 1922 and remains the oldest arthouse theatre in operation. After 100 years of management, it will become the new residence of Cinema StL. The new administration plans to make the theatre a premium tourist destination and an educational beacon within St. Louis.

If you’ve enjoyed the Hi-Pointe all these years, it will remain open with several new features. This article will cover what to expect from the new and improved Hi-Pointe theatre.

What is the Hi-Point Theatre?

Built in 1922, the Hi-Pointe Theatre is the oldest cinema arthouse in Saint Louis that is open to the public.

After over 50 years of premiering films, it was purchased and renovated by George and Georgia James. Under their stewardship, the theatre was made a cherished St. Louis landmark for all to enjoy.

Recently, after the theatre turned 100 years old, the James’ sold the Hi-Pointe to Cinema Saint Louis, a non-profit arts organization in St. Louis City. The theatre will become Cinema StL’s main base of operations in the coming years.

Where is it Located?

The theatre is located at 1005 McCausland Ave, St. Louis, MO 63117, on the southwest corner of Forest Park. When visiting, there’s plenty to do in Forest Park, the Loop, and the Central West End, some of the most popular destinations in St Louis.

When Will the Hi-Pointe Open?

The Hi-Pointe main theatre will open this spring for regular viewing. The theatre seats 414. Seating will be first-come, first-served.

While the theatre is not currently open, the Hi-Pointe Backlot is showing select films, running about a week at a time.

The Backlot is located at 1002 Hi-Pointe Place, 63117, just behind the theatre, sharing a parking lot. You can purchase tickets here.

What is Cinema StL?

Cinema St. Louis is a not-for-profit cinema art corporation passionate about making movies and culture accessible to all. They currently host five annual film festivals annually in the St. Louis metropolitan area, with additional community events year-round.

These events include film screenings for public middle and high schools. They hot educational programs to encourage young minds to pursue their passions in the arts.

What Are the Current Plans for Hi-Pointe Theatre?

With the Hi-Pointe Theatre becoming Cinema Stl’s main base of operations, several new changes are happening.

Cinema St. Louis wants to turn the Hi-Pointe Theatre into a regional destination for moviegoers and bring more visitors to the St. Louis area.

They aim to do this by showcasing St. Louis natives and their work, increasing access for underserved communities, and increasing free educational materials for schools in the StL area.
