The Missouri History Museum was originally built to commemorate Thomas Jefferson. It was built with proceeds from the 1904 World’s Fair. Over a century later, it continues providing free public exhibits on different aspects of St. Louis history. The Missouri History Museum contains three establishments, the History Museum, the Soldiers Memorial Military Building, and the Library Research Center. There’s a lot to see at the Missouri History Museum. Except for some special exhibits, it’s free to attend, with advance reservations. This article will cover essential information for your next visit to the Missouri History Museum.

Where is the Missouri History Museum Located?

The Missouri History Museum (MHM) is located on the north side of Forest Park, off Lindell Boulevard. It’s within driving distance of the Central West End and the Delmar Loop, so you’ll have plenty of dining and entertainment options before or after your visit.

Closed on Mondays.
Tues-Wed: 10:00a-5:00p
Thursday: 10:00a-8:00p
Fri-Sun: 10:00a-5:00p

Additionally, the Soldiers Memorial Military Building (SMMB) is open 10:00a-5:00p, Wednesday through Sunday.

As of this writing, the Library and Research Center are under construction. The project is due to be completed by February 2023. Typical hours for the LRC are the same as for the Soldier’s Memorial.

MHM Parking
Plenty of parking is available in double lots adjacent to the Museum, with additional parking throughout Forest Park. Parking is free.

Admission
Admission to the Missouri History Museum is free for all ages. However, for most exhibits, you will need to call in a reservation ahead of time to ensure there’s space available.

Top Attractions at the Missouri History Museum

Initially, the Missouri History Museum was built as a monument to Thomas Jefferson and later became a Museum to commemorate the history of St. Louis. The Museum features exhibits and attractions that tell the story of St. Louis since its founding in 1764.

In addition to the Museum, there is the Soldier Memorial and Library Research Center. Both add to the rich history of how this essential river trading post flourished into the Gateway to the West.

MHM Exhibits

The Museum itself has several rotating exhibits in addition to several regular installments. One of the biggest and brightest installments is the Spirit of St. Louis, a sister plane to the one flown by Charles Lindberg.

Current rotating exhibits include:

  • Coloring StL: A look into the vibrant architecture of StL’s variegated neighborhoods.
  • St. Louis Sound: A dive into the rich musical history of St. Louis.
  • 1904 World’s Fair: An exploration of the magnificent World’s Fair, which changed the history of StL forever.

Soldier Memorial Military Museum

The Soldier Memorial is the perfect stop for individuals interested in Military History, especially Missouri’s contribution to the United States’ military prowess.

You can tour the memorial or visit the current exhibit, Vietnam, At War, and At Home. This exhibit covers the entirety of the Vietnam war and St. Louis’ place in it.

MHM Library and Research Center

The Libary and Research Center is a beautiful place to visit if you’re interested in history, especially genealogy and photographic records.

The Missouri LRC contains over 1 million historic photographs and prints and 175,000+ artifacts to explore. Additionally, the research center specializes in genealogy and assisting people in discovering their ancestry.
