History and Background of the St. Louis Zoo
The St. Louis Zoo began in 1910 with the formation of the St. Louis Zoological Society. St. Louis citizens wanted to create a world-class zoo open to the public. Lehmann House’s original owner, Frederick W. Lehmann, was one of the essential figures who helped push legislation that provided the Zoo would be free to the public, a unique feature of this world-class zoo.
Over the years, the St. Louis Zoo has developed its original 77 acres in Forest Park to become one of the most popular in the nation. It became the first zoo in the world to have an exhibit specially designed for the elephant Miss Jim, which set the standard for future exhibits focused on animal welfare worldwide, in addition to other conservation efforts. Today, the Zoo is home to over 18,000 animals representing 700 species, making it a leader in animal care and education.
Throughout its history, the St. Louis Zoo has remained committed to providing visitors with an educational and enjoyable experience while promoting wildlife conservation.
