St. Louis offers a rich cultural tapestry of activities for visitors and residents to enjoy. One popular venue to explore is the Grandel Theater in Midtown St. Louis.
In the bustling Grand Center Arts District of St. Louis, the Grandel Theatre has been a significant cultural and historical landmark since the building’s inception in 1884. With a storied past that transitions from a church to a revered venue for the performing arts, the Grandel provides a rich context to explore the evolution of the local arts scene.
A History of Grandel Theater
The Grandel Theater began in 1884 as the First Congregational Church of St. Louis and features Gothic Revival architecture in a gorgeous setting that is still admired by visitors today.
During the early to mid-20th century, the church became vacant and unused for many years. At this time, it passed ownership but failed to find a steady purpose or rise to its once-gloried status.
In 1991, the Black Repertory Theatre purchased and accomplished a multimillion-dollar renovation on the church, transforming it into an arts establishment and bringing life to the cultural hub of North Grand, St. Louis.
In 2013, the Black Rep Theatre moved to The Loop neighborhood, and the Grandel sat vacant until 2017, when it was purchased and renovated by the Kranzberg Arts Foundation.
The Kranzberg family is responsible for many of the cultural activities available in Midtown St. Louis and for revitalizing venues, radio stations, and eateries in the area. Their mission is to create an open and diverse entertainment hub for city residents and visitors alike.
