Climb the Compton Hill Water Tower: A Hidden Viewpoint in St. Louis

If you’re looking for a unique view of St. Louis without the crowds at the Gateway Arch, make your way to Compton Hill Water Tower, just south of downtown. Located in Compton Hill Reservoir Park, this 1890s landmark is one of only seven surviving standpipe water towers in the United States — and it's a surprising slice of history hiding in plain sight.

Open to the public on select weekends and special occasions, climbing the 170 spiral steps to the top is an adventure in itself. The reward? A 360-degree panoramic view of the city skyline, including the Arch, downtown buildings, and tree-lined neighborhoods in every direction. It’s especially magical at sunset.

The tower stands 179 feet tall and once served a practical role in maintaining water pressure throughout the city. Today, it’s a preserved piece of engineering heritage, tucked inside a peaceful park where locals walk dogs, jog, or picnic in the shade.

While lesser known to visitors, Compton Hill Water Tower is a favourite among photographers, history lovers, and anyone looking to experience St. Louis from a new perspective.

So skip the usual landmarks for a day and head to Compton Hill — just a short drive from central St. Louis, but a world away from the usual tourist path.
