Celebrating 30 Years of Hospitality at Lehmann House Bed and Breakfast

Nestled in the city's heart, a special place has remained warm and welcoming for 30 years, Lehmann House Bed and Breakfast. It stands as a testament to true hospitality, providing travelers with a quality and comfortable space, bathed in historic charm.

The success of the Lehmann House is largely credited to my 34 years as a bed and breakfast specialist. My experience and dedication go beyond merely offering lodgings. It's about ensuring every guest feels pampered and catered to, in a way unique to them, while providing the best hospitality for all my guests.

I want to celebrate those 34 years and the 30th anniversary of the Lehmann House Bed and Breakfast.

How Long Has Lehmann House Been Open

Lehmann House Bed & Breakfast, nestled in the heart of Lafayette Square, St. Louis’ oldest historic district, has been a beacon of warm hospitality since August 1993.

Lehmann House, originally the home of F.W. Lehmann from 1898-1931, stands as a testament to my leap of faith to transition from a career in chemistry to embrace the hospitality industry.

Before Lehmann House became what it is today, I began my journey into the bed and breakfast world by opening the Parkside Cottage Bed and Breakfast on August 5, 1989. This endeavor was born out of my belief that I could offer a superior bed and breakfast experience, inspired by my less-than-stellar experience as a guest in other establishments.

As the years passed, the growing demands of my growing family and my thriving business led me to contemplate a transition. It was either quit or get a bigger house.

Deciding to purchase a more expansive property, we got the biggest house we could get and still stay in Lafayette Square. We purchased what would become the Lehmann House Bed and Breakfast a 20 room, 10,000 square foot mansion. Through these transitions, my passion and commitment have remained steadfast, solidifying Lehmann House's reputation as a top-tier accommodation option in St. Louis.

How Has Lehmann House Evolved Over the Years?

Since its establishment in 1993, Lehmann House Bed and Breakfast has seen a significant evolution. From adapting to the changing needs of my guests while continuing to broaden my services, to provide a great experience for my guests.

Over the years, one of the significant areas of growth for Lehmann House has been adding guest accommodations.

Starting with a limited number of rooms in 1993, the bed and breakfast expanded its capacity, refurbishing spaces to create more luxurious suites, while preserving the historical integrity of the house.

Here is a brief timeline of the room remodelings and openings over the past 30 years:

July 1993: Lehmann House opens with The President’s Room, Maid’s Room, and Sear’s Room (formally the Sun Room). The Sears and Maid’s rooms shared a hall bath, while the President’s Room featured an adjoining private bathroom.
1997: We open a new room on the third floor of the bed and breakfast, also with an en suite bath.
1999: The 1904 World’s Fair Room opens on the second floor, sharing a bathroom with the Maid’s Room, and briefly with the Sears Room. With the introduction of a Davies fifth child, the Sears/Sun Room is retired and turned into a family room.
2004: With five growing children, the current John Stark Room and Frederick’s Rooms are remodeled as kids' rooms.
2010: To better accommodate guests, the World’s Fair Room received its own en-suite bathroom. The Maid’s Room got the hall bath as its dedicated private bath. Every room, now, has its own private bath.
2011: Nora’s Room, previously the master bedroom for Frederick and Nora Lehmann, is remodeled with an en-suite bathroom.
2016: Frederick’s Room, previously the girls' room, is remodeled with an en-suite bathroom after my youngest went off to college.
2018: The Sears and John Stark Rooms, previously family rooms, are remodeled for guests, each with en-suite baths.
April 2023: The World’s Fair Room receives a private deck, when a two-story porch, designed under the original architectural plans for the house, providing unique accommodation while preserving the historical significance of the house and room.
Late August 2023: Recent renovations to the last of the third floor bedrooms will allow it to open to the public on August 31st, 2023. Stay tuned to hear more about this room in the coming weeks!
