St. Louis Zoo

The Zoo spans 90 acres and is home to over 19,000 animals, representing 655 species from around the world, it offers a great family day out when visiting St. Louis and staying at Lehmann House Bed and Breakfast.

Our second owner, Frederick W. Lehmann, believed that all citizens should have access to cultural venues, not just the wealthy. He initiated and helped get passed the legislation to include in the city charter that the zoo (and may of our museums) be free to the public. In addition to often being considered the best zoo in the country, it's one of the few free zoos in the US.

Due to husbandry concerns, there may be times when certain animals aren’t on display or certain animal buildings are closed to the public. At times, you may see keepers working in an animal habitat—it’s a perfect opportunity to ask about their work and the animals in their care!

Note that some animals are more active in the cooler morning hours and early evening hours, and in the cooler fall and winter months. No matter the time of year, the Saint Louis Zoo is an excellent choice, and my favorite place to go to! So, come out to play with our zoo animals!

Again, though the zoo is free to the public, except for special exhibits or shows, reservations are now required for your safety and the safety of our park staff. To check for hours of operation and to make your reservation, visit their website.

The Saint Louis Zoo web site will have more information on special events, exhibits, parking, etc., to help you make the most of your visit.
