Anniversary Reflection

I first laid eyes on this house in 1982--it seemed to call to me. I decided right there that I would own this house--whatever it took. On Valentine’s Day 1992, the house became ours, the beginning of Lehmann House Bed & Breakfast.

Anniversaries are milestones, as well as a time to reflect on where I was, how far I’ve come and a point for setting goals for where I am going. In 26 years, we have renovated 18/19 rooms, 9/10 bathrooms, and raised five kids. As I write, the finishing touches are being done to rooms 17 and 18, along with bathrooms eight and nine this week.

Some of what we’ve done include the following:

• The Worlds Fair Room got a complete make-over. The carpeting was taken up, the original floor refinished to include a “wood” carpet in the middle, where we melded new maple flooring with the old, in an effort to restore rather than replace. The floral wallpaper is now gone, the walls smoothed and now painted a beautiful golden yellow.
• Sears’ Room got a complete overhaul, including its own brand new private bath and the total renovation of the adjoining sun porch—our only room that’s a true suite. With ceiling fans for summer cooling, a heater for winter warming, the sun porch will be a sunny, cozy seating area for guests. Renovating the sun porch ranks in the top five for the “Ugly Duckling Turned Swan” room award. For winter guests who choose this room, they will have the option to reserve the use of the fireplace, which has been restored back to a wood burning fireplace.
• A 3rd floor bedroom, for many “The Boyz Room” (the bedroom of sons Nick, Chris & Alex), got its own en suite spacious bathroom. Yes! This will become a guest room AND we will have another room naming contest—stay tuned! We may even have a “Choose A Color For This Room contest!

What we didn’t get done, what we decided to put on hold until next year, is what we have dubbed the “Turret Room”. The very spacious en suite bathroom did get roughed in, and we have decided on the details, but we will wait to finish this until next year. I did start refinishing the cherry wood fireplace—so beautiful! But the rest of the details will have to wait. I want to reopen next week and be ready to host guests again.

To summarize, in 26 years, I have tackled all but one room and its bathroom (the “turret room”) and my goal is to finish both by this time next year.
