We've Named Our New Room

As I’m closing in on the final weeks of the renovation, I have chosen the winners of the Room Naming Contest. I wanted to thank everyone for their submissions, it was such fun having those pop into my Inbox over the last month! We had quite a turnout—so many of you took the time to enter!

If you’ve stayed here before, you may have read the biography on Frederick Lehmann’s rags to riches story in each guest room’s info book. For those of you who haven’t, Lehmann came to the US as a little boy, emigrating with his family from Prussia in 1855. They settled in Ohio. His home life compelled him to run away at the age of 10, eventually finding himself on the estate of a Judge Epenetus Sears, in Iowa. The judge, seeing something in young Frederick, takes a keen interest in him, funding his education through law school. Frederick’s promise to Judge Sears was, if he had a son he would name that son after the judge. Frederick’s oldest son was named Sears.

To quote the winner, Stephen Lehmann, the great grandson, of Frederick,

“Were it not for the compassion and vision of Judge Sears, I would not be here, you would not own that house and a young man would have disappeared into history unknown. Rarely can we trace the spark that lights the fuse to greatness, but we can in this case. “

So, to honor that vision, that “spark”, I’m naming the room, (The Judge) Sears’ Room.

To recap, our winners are:
1st Place: Stephen Lehmann, (Judge) Sears’ Room
2nd Place: Kimberly Nutting, The Sonne Room (“Sun” in German)
3rd Place: Jeanne Esche, The Saint Louis Room
