The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra is one of the leading musical establishments in the nation and has long been beloved by visitors and locals alike. In the spring of 2023, the SLSO will expand its luxurious Powell Hall to provide greater community access to music.

The original 98-year-old building will remain in use with three significant additions to the structure outside the concert hall totaling 65,000 sq ft. The renovations will be complete by 2025 at the 100th anniversary of Powell Hall.

If you love the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, don’t worry. They’ll perform throughout the community while Powell Hall is being renovated. This article will cover the renovations for Powell Hall, the new features they’ll bring, and when to expect the new Hall.

Where is Powell Hall in St. Louis?

Powell Hall is located at 718 N. Grand Ave, 63103,in the heart of St. Louis’ midtown. It is just ten minutes from accommodations at Lehmann House Bed & Breakfast.

This strip of Grand Avenue is famous for its entertainment and cultural venues, including the Fox Theatre, the Sheldon, the Grand Center Arts Academy, the Contemporary Art Museum and more.

Powell Hall was initially built as a vaudeville film theater in 1925 before becoming home to the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in 1968. After nearly 100 years in operation, the massive theatre will be renovated to offer community, innovation and culture, while maintaining the integrity of the original concert hall.

How Big is the Renovation?

The renovation will add 65,000 sq ft. of additions to the current Powell Hall theatre.

These renovations include the following:

  • A 3,400 square foot education and learning Center. The learning center will be the new rehearsal space for the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra and choir. It will also provide community engagement and cultural experiences for all individuals.
  • A state-of-the-art lobby. The new lobby will have amenities and special-needs accommodations while connecting all the buildings.
  • A premium backstage area. The new backstage area will provide the best amenities for visiting artists and our resident St. Louis Symphony Orchestra members.
  • New green spaces surrounding the Hall.
  • Updated acoustic engineering to optimize your listening experience.
  • Updated lighting to enhance your visual experience.
  • A reduction of about 500 seats with larger, more accommodating seating available.
  • An ADA-accesible venue.

When Will the Renovation Be Complete?

The renovation will be finished in 2025, in time for St. Louis Symphony Orchestra’s 100-year anniversary.

The focus of the renovation is to provide greater community access to music and the arts by providing a welcoming space that individuals from all walks of life can enjoy.

Their goal is to overcome the financial limitations of providing fine arts and make them accessible to communities where exposure to classical music is limited.

The project focuses not only on developing the musical potential of the hall but also improving the local parks, greeneries, and other cultural centers in the area.

Where Will St. Louis Symphony Orchestra Perform in the Meantime?

The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra will perform regular concerts at Powell Hall until May 14th, 2023. Parking will become limited after March 20th, the initial date of construction.

Following May 14th, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra will immerse itself into the community with performances around St. Louis, several of which will be free concerts.

Additionally, St. Louis Symphony Orchestra has two premium concert venues picked out for the majority of their concerts over the next two years.

For larger performances, they will perform at Stifel Theatre, a 3,100-seat concert hall in the heart of downtown St. Louis. Smaller, more intimate performances will be held at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on the campus of the University of Missouri St. Louis, Normandy, MO a suburb north St. Louis.

Both venues were selected for their excellent acoustics, welcoming amenities, and accessible locations.
