The St. Louis Shakespeare Festival is an anticipated annual event that blends the magic of live theater with the beauty of Forest Park. This year, the Shakespeare Festival offers a comprehensive cultural experience, featuring performances such as “As You Like It” and a touring production of “The Tempest.” Whether you’re a Shakespeare enthusiast or a first-time attendee, the festival promises a memorable experience for all.
What to Know About the Shakespeare Festival
The Shakespeare Festival, established in 2001, was founded to bring William Shakespeare's works to the public in an accessible and fun way. The festival has grown significantly over the years, with thousands coming to Glen Shakespeare in Forest Park each year to attend.
Each year, the festival showcases a blend of Shakespeare’s most famous works and lesser-known gems directed and performed by talented local artists. In addition to its mainstage productions, the St. Louis Shakespeare Festival also offers a range of community and educational programs. These include TourCo, Shakespeare in the Streets, the Confluence Writers Project, and the six-month Directing Fellowship program.
Main Performances
This summer, the St. Louis Shakespeare Festival will feature a captivating production of “As You Like It,” directed by Nancy Bell. The 2024 rendition will feature live music and new songs by local indie singer Beth Bombara and focus on romantic and comedic elements with a contemporary twist. The setting evokes the luxury of the Gilded Age, providing a stunning backdrop that complements the timeless narrative.
In addition to “As You Like It,” the festival’s TourCo will present “The Tempest,” directed by Tom Ridgely. This production will travel to 24 different parks between July 1 and August 25, making Shakespeare accessible to a broader audience in the city.
